Episode 223: Condemned Chinese Muppet Criminals

When the Tarkus rolls in, you best get a-runnin’! This week’s ELP-infused episode starts off with even more Skyrim stories, as Tony hauls back even more giant toes for the rest of of the group. Meanwhile, Kaz wanders through the generically-titled Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning demo, Tom knocks down the Eiffel Tower in CoDBlOps: Modern Wafare 3 (just go with it!) and Justin gathers grub in Stranger’s Wrath HD. Plus, Kurt Schilling, “Koyaanisqatsi” bellowing, the future of first person shooters, vague allusions to World War III, Run Roo Run mini-platforming and the spiritual successor to Aegis Wing.

This week’s podcast be mad trippin’, yo! The guys dynamically flail through several voicemails, with questions about games that took way too long to beat for no real reason, major mistakes for the big consoles, and the made genius of Swap Note. Afterwards, Kaz has his own Skyrim story about a poor dog and the monster who killed him, while Justin and Tom fall for Pigcop’s tricks in Duke Nukem Forever. Plus, the ChuChu Rocket! sequel you don’t want, glitching up the mountain, utterly pointless gaming declarations, Dead Island and some love for Luigi.

It’s the numbing sensation that’s sweeping the nation! This week, the Pack gathered for a live podcast in Cleveland, Ohio, and we have both audio and video recordings of the madness. The show starts off with some Secret Santa cheer but then breaks down into a horrific holiday taste test for which nobody is prepared. “Pop-Tart juice,” horse beans, Dr. Pepper popcorn and more await the cast’s intrepid taste buds. Afterwards, everyone shares his games of the year, with some surprising choices on each list. Plus, bees in our mouths, stapling with a hammer, listener Skype calls, 2011 disappointments, resolutions, high fives, chaos emeralds and visible face-palms.

Special thanks to all of you who joined us last Thursday.

Beware of the squatty potty. This week, you’ll learn more about the Pack than you ever wanted to know, but a few video games do manage to sneak into the discussion. Tom chauffeurs cheetahs around in Saint’s Row: The Third, Tony becomes a rolling ball of troll fat in Skyrim, Kaz almost maybe consider picking up a 3DS and Justin ponders why Samus has a hunchback in Metroid Fusion. Plus, Grandma’s plastic furniture, “Pat-Facts,” Jeremy Renner mysteries, our own Reddit celebrity, Kinectimals on iOS (but not quite), embracing the 3DS, sitting vs. standing and an extended Justin hate-fest for the holidays.

UPDATE: WE ARE FINALLY LIVE.

It’s time to ring in the new year with your old friends at The Rumble Pack. The enormous distance between us usually forces us to record over Skype, but because we’ll all be in the same city for a change – the first time in years – it made sense to try the whole “call-in podcast” thing again. You’ll be able to watch us via video stream, call up our special “rumble.pack.call.in” Skype line and chat with other members of the Rumble Nation.

Our live show will include:

  • Our Game of the Year lists, complete with heckling
  • A Secret Santa exchange
  • A pre-recorded ghostly visit
  • Bro-hugs, pointless taste tests, call-in questions and more

Hopefully you can find time between your winter holidays to tune in. We’ll be releasing our video feed details in the coming days, so watch this space!

Pushmo Review

You probably wouldn’t expect it out of a 3DS eShop game, but Pushmo is one of the most satisfying and thrilling handheld games I’ve played this year. At times, it’s the puzzle game equivalent of scaling Everest, or this genre’s take on the epic boss fights of Shadow of the Colossus. The simple presentation and mechanics belie Pushmo‘s uncompromising difficulty and a fantastic level editor that has already spawned hundreds of intricate user-created levels. The game begins with your avatar pulling out basic staircases to reach the top of a small wall; by puzzle 100 or so, you’re moving entire towers and leaping along narrow ledges high above the ground.

As the title implies, pushing walls in is a major element of Pushmo, but just as important is pulling them out. Each levels starts off with a flat surface, and the challenge lies in figuring out which colored segments to move in what order, keeping in mind that there are three different planes along which you can move. Early on, this push/pull technique is used to make basic stepping stones leading to the goal (and a random living puffball in need of your aid). It’s fun, but you’ve seen similar block puzzles in games like Catherine and Cuboid, among many others. However, as the puzzles get taller and wider, the stakes become much greater as well. A handy rewind feature ensures that Pushmo is never too frustrating, but you’ll need to be patient and methodical when climbing up a multi-screen Christmas tree.

Episode 219: An Unholy Squeal in the Night

Project Hot Mom has commenced! This week, the holiday season is petering out, and the Pack is left to come to terms with the aftermath. Tom takes down disgraced character actor Jeffrey Jones in Mario Kart 7, Justin declares Pushmo the game that will change everything, and Kaz plays the latest Magic expansion, Innistrad. Plus, Counterstrike: Global Offensive, the real reason people watch the VGAs, breaking into the Assassin’s Creed: Revelations tomb, Secret Santas galore and “The World’s Greatest Person” revealed.

UPDATE: Congratulations to Tom, the official greatest human being ever!

If you’ve listened to some of our more recent episodes, you may have heard about our holiday season video game fantasy draft. At the beginning of last week’s show, some of our Podcast Nation chums joined us in officially selecting from a pool of upcoming blockbusters. Standings will be based on an algorithm devised by Kaz that takes into account each game’s Metacritic score and the number of reviewers.

The notion may be silly, but the stakes could not be higher. The winner will officially be declared “World’s Best Person,” a title indisputable under any circumstances. Our picks are displayed below, and we’ll be updating from time to time so you can follow the rankings along with ourselves.

Game on!
